Summary

HOME project is to empower young people to critically assess social media and interact more responsibly online, in a way that safeguards their own wellbeing as well as actively contributing to that of others and society in general. Young people lead a digital life, using the internet and especially social media to explore, connect, create and learn in ways never before imagined. However, social media is a double-edged sword and new young people are increasingly exposed too online behaviors that erode their confidence, interpersonal relations: online peer pressure and abuse, the search for aesthetic perfection, the over-sharing of personal information, the ͚echo chamber” effect and risks of radicalization all pose serious risk to the development of positive, confident, active young citizens.

Objectives

HOMEs objectives is to work collaboratively as five international across sectoral partners to investigate and explore the potential hazards of social media, and from our fundings produce a media literacy app which will:

  • Provide an accessible and appropriate way for young people to learn and implement key digital citizenship skills such as safety, privacy, responsibility, etiquette, and respect
  • Have a resource for use if they are upset or worried, with the goal to minimizing potential risks
  • Empower young people to become critical and thoughtful consumers of media as they navigate through their ever-expanding social media environment.

HOME project will work across a range of European partners to create a toolkit of strategies and open educational resources. The prime objectives of which is to provide a construct for adolescents to develop their own personal critical thinking skills and minimize risk to their safety and well-being. This accessible safeguarding tool can be used in total privacy in the form of a media literacy app, incorporating the main citizenship principles of respect, education and protection.
