SELFIE WBL webinar: an opportunity to learn how this tool can help you
The SELFIE WBL webinar held online on February 22 started with a warm welcome message from Yves Punie, Acting Head of Human Capital and Employment Unit, Joint Research Centre (JRC).
Afterwards, Chiara Riondino, Head of VET Unit, DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) gave a short opening speech, in which she highlighted the utility and importance of a tool like SELFIE WBL. In her talk, she pointed out that SELFIE for work-based learning is “the result of years of good cooperation between commission services, partners, stakeholders, and so on.”
Despite or, maybe due to VET being very close to the labor market and emerging trends, COVID-19 has hit vocational and educational training heavily. However, VET also showed to be on the forefront of this new reality.
Tim Schreiber (DG EMPL) and César Herrero (JRC) put the tool in context and explained a bit more about it. SELFIE WBL is “a self-reflection tool for schools to gauge the schools’ use of digital technology. It brings together perspectives of school leaders, teachers, and students. SELFIE WBL is an online tool that can easily be used on any device.” In numbers, SELFIE WBL has registered a total of 2 368 408 users in 86 different countries. The tool was defined to be a cyclic process with different stages that should be repeated once and again for better outcomes. The purpose is always to improve and move forward.
During the webinar, three different testimonials were presented: first, Alessandro Brolpito (ETF) introduced the international dimension of SELFIE WBL. He described how the tool was used not only in the EU, but also in four other countries, which are Georgia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey.
Following his presentation two EfVET members and SELFIE WBL follow-up project partners intervened. Alicia Miklavcic (Skupnost) highlighted the fact that VET providers struggle to translate the data they receive from the SELFIE report into a real digital action plan. Therefore, support needs to be given to schools and institutions to understand the data, prioritise the information and create effective action plans. Rémi Plantier (SEPR), as a teacher, showed his satisfaction with SELFIE WBL and explained how useful it has been not only for them but also for students.
Finally, Lilian Weikert (JRC) explained briefly how the tool works and how it is used by giving a SELFIE WBL demo.
Before the closing by Nikoleta Giannoutsou (JRC), there was a Q&A session.
