Gender equality in apprenticeships: how can we close the gap in participation?

The European Commission, Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, is pleased to invite you to the 9th Live Discussion on ‘Gender equality in apprenticeships: how can we close the gap in participation?’, taking place online on 24th June 2021, from 14:00 to 15:15 CEST.

Evidence shows that women are underrepresented in apprenticeship schemes. The COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impact on sectors with a high share of female apprentices, including education, health and care, and the service sectors.

The overall gender gap in apprenticeships has been narrowed by widening apprenticeships into traditionally female sectors whilst improving access for women to traditionally male-dominated occupations. Targeted measures include funding apprenticeship initiatives for young women in their early careers, as well as implementing retraining in sectors where women are heavily represented. However, measures are also needed to address barriers reported by female apprentices, including gender stereotyping, traditional gender roles, lack of career guidance, as well as safety concerns about sexual harassment and gender-based violence.

The 9th Live Discussion will examine how the gender gap in the apprenticeship sector can be addressed and how apprenticeships can serve as a tool for promoting gender equality in employment. Most importantly, we will examine the role apprenticeships can play in promoting gender equality in the workplace, how can the image of apprenticeships be improved in sectors where women are underrepresented and the enhancement of the image of apprenticeships in order to widen participation of women.

The live discussion will be chaired by Ann Vanden Bulcke, Policy Officer, DG Employment, European Commission and moderated by Dr William Hammonds, Senior Research Manager, Ecorys.

The following guests will also intervene during the panel discussion:

  • Ms Christina Haaf, Head of International Cooperation, Girls’ Day Project, Competence Centre for Technology Diversity and Equal Opportunities, Germany.
